Intangible heritage

Locks and pumping stations were operated by our distant predecessors. They had all kinds of tools for this, but ultimately our work always remained human labour. All kinds of traditions, general and linguistic customs arose within the water authorities, and some disappeared again. Below is a brief overview of some intangible heritage that has survived us.

The water authority is the oldest democratic organisation the Netherlands. This has left its mark, and not only in physical terms. The intangible heritage of the Noorderzijlvest Water Authority has yet to be inventoried, but we do know that there are at least three categories.

Customs

As the oldest democratic organisation, the water authority has a number of customs. For example, the board used to go on inspection tours, but voting is of course also part of the traditions of a water authority.

Professions

A number of professions within the water authority are centuries old. Although they have a modern twist, these professions can also be classified as intangible heritage.

Word and language usage

A water authority uses technical terms that only apply to the water sector. This use also comes under intangible heritage.
