Lower CO2 emissions and savings on transport and processing costs for dredged material

Groningen Seaports and the Noorderzijlvest Water Authority are working together to reuse dredged material from dredging projects locally. In doing so, both parties are contributing to the circular use of dredged material. Today, the first transport of dredged material to the Oosterhorn industrial area in Delfzijl took place.

Lower CO2 emissions and cost savings

Through this collaboration, both parties are contributing to the circular use of dredged material, which in this way becomes a raw material instead of a waste product. In this way, the Noorderzijlvest Water Authority and Groningen Seaports are reducing CO2 emissions and saving on material and processing costs.

Supply of dredged material - raising the level of the Delfzijl industrial site

Dredged material can be used for the necessary raising of the industrial site in Delfzijl. Sea sand will be used for the higher parts due to its draining effect. The water board will supply approximately 30,000 m3 of dredged material for raising the industrial site. Thanks to the circular use of dredged material, this industrial-grade dredged material does not have to be processed far outside the area and transported over long distances. In this way, the water board and Groningen Seaports are jointly achieving lower CO2 emissions and reducing the total dredging costs by reducing the costs of transport and processing.

Dredging work

From early 2023 through 2025, the Noorderzijlvest Water Authority will be dredging a large number of waterways in Delfzijl, Appingedam, and the surrounding area. This is necessary to ensure water flow and maintain water quality. Farmers process as much dredged material as possible from waterways bordering their land. However, dredged material from urban areas and sewer overflows often cannot be processed on site. This is normally transported to processing locations near the city of Groningen and Grolloo, in Drenthe.

Cooperation between the Water Authority and Groningen Seaports

Within the 'Grip op Grond in Grunn' platform, which brings together land supply and demand, the Noorderzijlvest Water Authority has established contact with Groningen Seaports. In the coming years, this organization will have a significant need for soil to prepare industrial plots in the Delfzijl industrial area for construction. The urban dredging and overflow dredging from Noorderzijlvest that cannot be processed locally is of industrial quality. This makes it suitable for use on this industrial site and thus for reuse.
