Agreements on water levels sometimes need to be renegotiated. Circumstances and insights can change. We recently made thirteen new water level decisions. The measures for eleven of these decisions have already been implemented. We are currently working on the implementation measures for two of the decisions: Fivelingo and Spijksterpompen.

Level decisions in preparation

Most monitoring decisions relate to the subsidence caused by natural gas extraction. In these areas in North Groningen, subsidence exceeds 10 centimeters. This affects the functioning of the water system.

An exception to this is the draft water level decision for Dwarsdiep in the Zuidelijk Westerkwartier. This water level decision is necessary for the redevelopment of the stream valley to enable water storage and nature development.

Adopted water level decisions

In recent years, the general board has adopted a number of new water level decisions. There were various reasons for this. The water level decisions adopted since 2019 are:

Fivelingo bosom

Spiked pumps

At the end of 2020, we started preparations for the Spijksterpompen water level decision.

  • In 2022, we spoke with farmers and landowners about the current functioning of the water system.
  • Using the results of the studies, our calculation models, and information from the surrounding area, we will draw up a draft water level decision in the second quarter of this year.
  • In the third and fourth quarters, we will organize regional meetings to discuss this draft water level decision with all stakeholders.

Fanerpolder, Zuidhorner Zuidpolder, Vredewold, Lagemeeden, Nienoord, and Lettelbert/Driepolders

A new water level decision was adopted for these polders in June 2019. The water level decision was implemented within the Zuidelijk Westerkwartier district.

  • These polders are quite low-lying and have a high water level. When there is heavy rainfall, the water from ditches can sometimes overflow onto the land. Standards have been agreed in the National Administrative Agreement on Water Management regarding how often this may occur. This means that grassland may be flooded with water from the surrounding ditches once every 10 years. This is permitted on 5% of the lowest part of the polder.
  • Peat occurs here and there in the subsoil of the six polders. This means that we cannot simply lower the water levels. Lowering water levels can lead to subsidence in peat soils.
