De Waterwolf pumping station

The magnificent 100-year-old De Waterwolf pumping station is located on the Reitdiep in the province of Groningen and is one of the largest pumping stations in the Netherlands. Until 1877, excess water from the northwest of the province was drained naturally into the sea via the Reitdiep. After the Reitdiep was partially closed off with a dike, this was no longer possible. In order to keep the land dry, the province and the government decided to build a pumping station: the Waterwolf. The pumping station was the first electrically powered pumping station in the Netherlands and is one of the largest of its kind. The building is now listed as a national monument and is still in use today.
