Update: water levels falling; more precipitation on the way

Water levels are currently falling throughout the entire working area. The water board is monitoring precipitation that is still expected from Thursday afternoon and evening.

Overflow areas deployed

On Tuesday evening, the water board activated the overflow areas in the Vredewoldpolder and the Lettelberterbergboezem. These overflow areas are areas that the water board can activate almost immediately. Respectively, just under 250,000 cubic meters and almost 500,000 cubic meters of water flowed into these areas.  The water board made this decision after the water level of the Leekstermeer became very high and did not seem to be falling quickly. The high water level last night can be explained by the large amount of water flowing from the higher areas in Drenthe via De Onlanden to the lower-lying Leekstermeer. The water flows via the Leekstermeer to the Lauwersmeer. The water levels of the Leekstermeer are now also slowly falling.

Tolberter Petten: emergency drainage

At the end of Wednesday morning, the pumping station at Tolberter Petten failed. Emergency drainage is therefore being used there. The water board is working on a permanent solution.

Inspections of quays

All the precipitation has saturated the ground. This also applies to dikes and quays along waterways. That is why the water board regularly inspects the dikes and quays to check for damage caused by erosion and possible subsidence.
