Frequently asked questions Runsloot-Stroetenloop
What measures does the Runsloot-Stroetenloop project involve? When will the work start and what will be the outcome? Read the answers to frequently asked questions.
What happens at the Runsloot and Stroetenloop?
The Noorderzijlvest Water Authority is improving the Eelderdiep stream system. This system includes the Runsloot and Stroetenloop streams. We are doing this in accordance with European agreements on clean and healthy water (Water Framework Directive). The aim is to reduce the impact of drought, water shortages, polluted water, and damage to nature. By designing the area in a more natural way, we are making the water system stronger, healthier, and more resistant to extreme weather. In this way, we are improving water quality and ensuring more plants and animals in and around the water.
Why is the pilot project being launched at Runsloot first?
We will start with a trial in the Runsloot. When devising measures, it is important that they do not cause problems for the surrounding area. For example, they must not have a negative impact on water safety, homes, land use, or the groundwater level of surrounding agricultural land. With this pilot (trial project), we want to gain experience and test in practice what the effects are on water level, flow, fish stocks, and plant growth. That is why we are installing measuring points, so that we can see exactly what the measures are doing.
When will the results of the pilot be known?
- We will start the pilot (trial project) in 2026 and will begin monitoring immediately.
- After about a year, we have reliable results.
Is the pilot only taking place in Runsloot?
Yes. The pilot (trial project) will only take place in the Runsloot. This involves measures that may affect private land. We would like to test in advance whether there will be any negative impacts.
We do not need to conduct a pilot project at Stroetenloop, because we expect to be able to use adjacent land belonging to the Drents Landschap and Staatsbosbeheer. These organizations are involved in the development of the measures.
What kind of measures will be introduced?
An integrated action plan is currently being developed. One example is narrowing the stream to increase the flow. Another is adjusting management practices: by mowing the waterway less, we give nature more space.
When will the work start and finish?
The Runsloot pilot project will commence in the first quarter of 2026. Other work will take place after the contract has been awarded. We expect work to start around or after the summer of 2026. The project will be completed in 2027.

What are the benefits of this project?
By implementing certain measures, we are strengthening the stream system. We expect the following results:
- A natural and self-regulating stream valley and stream system
- Better sponge effect, so that water is retained better in the area
- Better water quality by ensuring more flow in the stream.
- More different plants, aquatic animals, and fish in and around the water.
