Preparations for exploratory study begin
14 July 2025
How can we improve the transition between freshwater and saltwater at lake Lauwersmeer, while taking nature, agriculture, and water safety into account? Preparations for this important exploration have begun. Until 2028, we will be studying which solutions work best for a future-proof lake together with regional partners.

The first steps have been taken
In the coming period, we will set up an extensive monitoring network to map the salinity in and around the lake accurately. We will also set ecological targets and study the building blocks needed to develop different solutions. We hope to have a clear ecological target and an assessment framework in place by early 2026. This will enable us to continue exploring the most promising options for the freshwater-saltwater transition in a targeted manner.
Collaboration is key
We are not conducting this exploration alone. We are working closely with other authorities and seeking advice from site managers, nature organisations, farmers, and other stakeholders. This ensures that nature, water quality, water safety, and agriculture are all carefully taken into account.
