Preparations for exploration begin

July 14, 2025

How can we improve the transition between fresh and salt water at Lauwersmeer, while taking nature, agriculture, and water safety into account? Preparations for this important exploration have begun. Together with regional partners, we will be investigating which solutions work best for a future-proof lake until 2028.

The first steps have been taken

In the coming period, we will set up an extensive monitoring network to accurately map the salinity in and around the lake. We will also set ecological targets and investigate which building blocks are needed to develop different solutions. We hope to have a clear ecological target and an assessment framework in place by early 2026. This will enable us to continue exploring the most promising options for the freshwater-saltwater transition in a targeted manner.

Collaboration is key

We are not conducting this exploration alone. We are working closely with other authorities and seeking advice from land managers, nature organizations, farmers, and other stakeholders. In this way, we are ensuring that nature, water quality, water safety, and agriculture are all carefully taken into account.
