Future of the lake Lauwersmeer area

Lake Lauwersmeer has unique and vulnerable nature and water quality. Fish migration and biodiversity require a better transition between freshwater and saltwater. Farmers need freshwater for their animals and crops. Water safety is also important. Climate change is altering the discharge of water into the sea. Together with regional partners, we are exploring the challenges for a future-proof lake Lauwersmeer.

Area approach

In the lake Lauwersmeer area, we are working with government agencies, nature organisations, and farmers to address the challenges facing nature, water, and climate.

Goals

This is what we want to achieve: 

  • Clean and healthy water
  • Enough water in every season
  • Waterproofing the future 

Freshwater and saltwater

How can we achieve a better transition from freshwater to saltwater in the northern part of the lake while the southern part remains fresh for agriculture.

Saltwater monitoring network

We are setting up a monitoring network to measure the salinity in and around the lake. This will enable us, and our regional partners, to learn more about the water system in the area.

Exploratory study

How can we achieve the transition from freshwater to saltwater in lake Lauwersmeer? Water safety is a prerequisite. We will be conducting an exploratory study until 2028.
