Enforcement of our regulations. In the Netherlands, we have regulations for water and soil. These are laws and decrees, such as the Environment and Planning Act, the Environmental Activities Decree, and the Water-Authority Regulation. Our employees who are responsible for enforcement check that companies and individuals comply with these regulations. Our employees also provide information about the regulations that apply to water and soil. We do this by means of company visits, newsletters, and presentations in order to prevent violations as much as possible.

What do we do in the event of a violation?

If violations do occur, we request that the offender takes measures. For example, clean up a watercourse or repair a dyke. The water authority is authorised to impose a penalty and to revoke the permit. We also employ Special Investigating Officers (BOAs). In the event of a violation, they issue a financial administrative penalty or an official report.

Enforce compliance

In the event of a violation, you can enforce compliance yourself by submitting an enforcement request. This must be submitted to the competent authority, such as the water authority. This can be done in writing or by email. The competent authority must process your complaint. It is possible to submit a complaint anonymously. You will receive a response to the enforcement request no later than 8 weeks after submitting it.

Why area-specific enforcement?

Area-specific enforcement means that we adapt our supervision and enforcement to the situation in a particular area. We look at the soil, the water, how the land is used, and how much pressure there is on the environment. This enables us to respond better to what is needed in a particular area.
