Work in progress

Every day, we contribute to waterproofing the future. We work to provide clean, healthy, and treated water, and ensure sufficient water in every season. We do this for the people in our area. This page provides an overview of all the activities and projects currently underway.

  • Maintenance of R.J. Cleverings locks

In April 2017, major maintenance work began on the R.J. Cleverings locks in Lauwersoog. We are replacing the guiderails for the lift gates and the counterweights for one of the 12 sluice pipes. The work began in 2017 and will continue until 2025.

  • Pressure pipe Bornholm Street

There is a large main pressure pipe between the Damsterdiep sewage pumping station and the Garmerwolde wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). One of these sites is on Bornholmstraat, near Sontweg. We will be replacing this connection in October 2025.

  • Golden Soils Programme

Better soil management. A partnership for better soil management with the provincial executive and the agricultural sector. Area-specific projects for better water quality and less desiccation.

  • Building with Nature Project

The greatest threat to the North Sea region is climate change. But by 'building with nature', we are sure to find solutions that are more effective and sustainable. We studied this in the Interreg project 'Building With Nature'.

  • Lake Paterswoldsemeer Area Programme Project

Between 2018 and 2024, we implemented various measures to improve the water quality of lake Paterswoldsemeer. Several monitoring programmes have been launched.

  • Long-term Field Measurements Project

The water authority will conduct long-term measurements of the effect of water levels, waves, and wind in the Wadden Sea and the Eems-Dollard area.

  • Restoration of Zuidema's Klap drawbridge

The water authority restored the Zuidema's Klap drawbridge near Niekerk (Leens). The restoration has been completed in the meantime. The bridge was reopened to road traffic on 23 July 2021.

  • Westerkwartier Wastewater Treatment Plant

Project website: The Noorderzijlvest Water Authority is constructing a new sewage treatment plant in Gaarkeuken. This will eventually replace the old plants in Marum, Gaarkeuken, and Zuidhorn. Cleaner water, better for the environment, and less odour and noise in the surrounding area.

  • Schouwerzijl lock

Works. A closure mechanism has been installed in the lock. The lock has also been renovated and the Schouwerzijlster bridge has been repaired. The railings have been installed, but the paving and harbour layout work has been postponed until early 2023 due to the weather conditions in recent weeks (frost and rain). We expect to complete the project in 2023.
