Every day, we contribute to waterproofing the future. We work to provide clean, healthy, and treated water, and ensure enough water in every season. We do this for the people in our area. This page provides an overview of all the activities and projects currently underway.

  • Restoration of Zuidema's Klap drawbridge

    The water authority restored the Zuidema's Klap drawbridge near Niekerk (Leens). The restoration has been completed in the meantime. The bridge was reopened to road traffic on 23 July 2021.

  • Westerkwartier Wastewater Treatment Plant

    Project website: The Noorderzijlvest Water Authority is constructing a new sewage treatment plant in Gaarkeuken. This will eventually replace the old plants in Marum, Gaarkeuken, and Zuidhorn. Cleaner water, better for the environment, and less odour and noise in the surrounding area.

  • Schouwerzijl lock

    Works. A closure device has been installed in the lock. The lock has also been renovated and the Schouwerzijlster bridge has been repaired. The railings have been installed, but the paving and harbour layout work has been postponed until early 2023 due to the weather conditions in recent weeks (frost and rain). We expect to complete the project in 2023.

  • Future of the lake Lauwersmeer area

    In the unique and vulnerable lake Lauwersmeer area, we are working with local partners to find solutions that strengthen nature, agriculture, and water safety.

  • Expansion of balancing lake De Onlanden

    De Onlanden balancing lake is being expanded. Its capacity will increase from 7.5 to 12.7 million cubic metres of water. The expanded balancing lake is expected to be completed in 2027.

  • Reinforcement of Hoornsedijk and Meerweg

    Noorderzijlvest Water Authority is working to reinforce the Hoornsedijk and the Meerweg. These dykes are an important flood defence for Groningen Zuid and the surrounding area. With this work, we are ensuring that the dyke remains safe into the future.

  • Solar farms at wastewater treatment plants

    Noorderzijlvest aims to be an energy-neutral water authority by 2025. We are going to construct solar parks on the sites of wastewater treatment plants. By generating our own sustainable energy, we will need to purchase less fossil fuel energy and will ensure lower CO2 emissions.

  • Sewage sludge treatment at Garmerwolde wastewater treatment plant

    We are studying how sewage sludge can be disposed of in a sustainable, reliable, and efficient manner at the Garmerwolde wastewater treatment plant (WWTP).
